Evaluation guide
Evaluate MonoDuty and PagerDuty with the same incident drill
Competitor prices, packaging and availability change. This guide deliberately avoids copying those claims. It states the current MonoDuty production boundary and gives you a repeatable checklist to run against both products.
Content reviewed:
- Published MonoDuty Pro catalogue price per user/month
- $9
- MonoDuty paid activation; no self-service checkout
- Sales-assisted
- Current MonoDuty Monitor execution location
- Helsinki
Side by side
A qualified comparison
Plan names do not imply identical scope. The context column calls out differences that a headline checkmark would hide.
| Criterion | MonoDuty | PagerDuty | Decision context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current price and contract | Free is $0. The catalogue lists Pro at $9 and Business at $19 per user/month; paid activation is sales-assisted. | Check the current PagerDuty documentation; this guide does not reproduce a price or feature claim that may change. | Request a written quote and compare billing cadence, taxes, add-ons, overages and cancellation terms. |
| Production signal intake | The generally available integration is the Universal HTTP Webhook using the documented MonoDuty JSON contract. | Check the current PagerDuty documentation; this guide does not reproduce a price or feature claim that may change. | Send representative create, duplicate and recovery events; do not infer compatibility from an integration name. |
| Notification delivery | 500 SMS and 200 voice calls/month are listed for Pro, alongside email. Delivery depends on external providers and must be tested. | Check the current PagerDuty documentation; this guide does not reproduce a price or feature claim that may change. | Test real destinations, quota exhaustion and failure handling in every finalist. |
| On-call and escalation | All plans include on-call scheduling; Pro and Business include configurable escalation policies. | Check the current PagerDuty documentation; this guide does not reproduce a price or feature claim that may change. | Recreate time zones, rotations, overrides, acknowledgement and fallback behavior before deciding. |
| Availability observations | Monitor checks currently execute from Helsinki only. MonoDuty publishes no uptime SLA or multi-region probe claim. | Check the current PagerDuty documentation; this guide does not reproduce a price or feature claim that may change. | Separate product availability commitments from the geography of synthetic checks. |
| TLS certificate behavior | HTTPS checks validate the certificate and hostname during connection; certificate inventory, expiry tracking and expiry warnings are not provided. | Check the current PagerDuty documentation; this guide does not reproduce a price or feature claim that may change. | Use a dedicated certificate inventory when expiry warning is a requirement. |
Start with requirements, not a winner
Write down required sources, roles, schedules, escalation rules, destinations, retention, reporting and procurement controls. Mark each as required, optional or out of scope before opening either product.
A plan name or checkmark is not evidence that two implementations behave the same way. Record the exact configuration and observed result for every requirement.
Use one acceptance test
Run the same non-production incident scenarios against each finalist. Include duplicate events, off-hours ownership, a missing primary response, a provider failure and a recovery event.
- Confirm the intended person owns each incident.
- Confirm each configured destination and fallback with a safe test.
- Measure outcomes in your environment instead of relying on marketing latency.
- Capture the current quote and contract terms directly from each vendor.
Test the workflow with your own alerts
